This classical style of expressive movement has something to offer for everyone. Ballet dates back to the 17th century. The conventional steps, grace and fluidity of movement are still found in Ballet today. Ballet has a technique which is the foundation of all dance.
Classes start at the 'barre', with routines designed to increase strength, mobility and 'turn out'.
We follow the I.S.T.D (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) syllabus, which is widely recognised as one of the best standards for ballet.
We accept children from the age of 2 where the classes combine creative movement and coordination exercises with rudimentary Ballet Instruction.
Classes are currently available up to grade 6 and Pointe work
Jazz has a solid background in Ballet but every teacher has their own specific style. Ever since it began more than sixty years ago, jazz dancing is changing every day.
Jazz has become one of the most popular dance styles in recent years, mainly due to its popularity on television shows, movies, music videos and commercials. People enjoy watching jazz dancers, as the dancing is fun and energetic.
Street is a fascinating style of dance which has become increasingly popular among artists within the music industry. It is a mixture of body popping, hip hop and traditional jazz which all originated in America 30 years ago. It consists of sharp, quick movements as well as open-hand arms gestures, isolated movements, sliding feet motion, body and arms waves.
Our classes are fantastic confidence builders and the social interaction aspect is a great way of introducing a fun, growing style of dance.
Freestyle began in the 1970s with John Travolta in the film Saturday Night Fever. Since then it has evolved, changing all the time with current trends & music. It incorporates so many different moves, such as kicks, spins, leaps, runs, fast arm movements, leg holds to side, front and back.
The music is fast and ‘beaty’ allowing dancers of all ages to use freedom of expression to enhance their styles. Younger dancers are taught to feel the rhythm, translate that feeling to their movements, and ultimately dance to the beat. More experienced freestyle dancers learn to dance with speed, grace, attack and attitude.
Classes cater for the absolute beginner to championship level.
Tap dancing is generally associated with the films and musicals of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly but it's origins have always been sketchy. The English say it relates back to Clog Dancing, the Irish say it originates from the Jigs and Step Dancing and Americans say it comes from New York City. Recent musicals, Stomp and Tap Dogs highlight the great diversities of style and music in tapping.
Tap has to be one of the most enjoyable and rhythmic dance styles and children as young as two can join our classes. Where else can children get away with making a noise but in a tap class.
Lyrical dance is a dance style that blends ballet and jazz dance. Lyrical is generally smoother and a bit faster than ballet, but not quite as fast as jazz. A lyrical dancer uses movement to express strong emotions such as love, joy and anger. Lyrical dancers usually perform to music with lyrics...the lyrics of the chosen song serve as inspiration for movements and expressions. Music used for lyrical is typically emotionally charged and expressive. Music may consist of many genres including pop, rock and hip hop. Powerful, expressive songs are often used in lyrical dance to give dancers a chance to express a range of strong emotions through their dancing.
The sport of tumbling began in the USA in the late 1800’s. Through qualify tumbling instructions we strive to encourage and teach children of all ages. Strength, technique and flexibility will be developed, whilst reinforcing safety and proper skill technique. Learning forward rolls to flips, all abilities are welcome.
Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. It is not unusual for modern dancers to invent new steps for their routines, instead of following a structured code of technique, as in ballet.
Another characteristic of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy on their feet, modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance movement. A modern dancer rejects the classical ballet stance of an upright, erect body, often opting instead for deliberate falls to the floor.
Ballroom dancing has recently made an unprecedented comeback. With the popularity of the many televised dancing shows, ballroom dancing schools seem to be popping up all over the country. Grab a partner and find out how much fun you've been missing on the dance floor.
Hip hop is a dance style, usually danced to hip hop music, that evolved from the hip hop culture. The first dance associated with hip hop was breakdancing. While breakdancing consists primarily of moves executed close to the ground, the majority of hip hop moves are done standing up.
Hip hop developed from several cultures, including jazz, rock, tap and American and Latino cultures. Hip hop is a very energetic form of dancing. It is unique in that it allows its dancers to perform with freedom of movement, adding in their own personalitiesHip hop dance steps require skill and experience to perfect. Hip hop dancers practice a lot in order to master basic steps and movements that appear simple when performed. Dancers with a good sense of rhythm find it easier to learn hip hop steps.
