COMPETITION CONDUCT

If you attend the Disco Freestyle class you will have to the opportunity to attend competitions at least once a month. Sections in the competitions include Solo, Pairs, Teams, Slow Dance, Rock n Roll Pairs and Street.

At a competition you must dance anti clockwise round the dance floor (you have to constantly be moving) with the judges (who are usually dance teachers) standing around the outside. Dancing this way is to prevent you bumping into other dancers, this is called floor craft.

All dancers have an individual number, usually pinned on to the back of their costume and the judges will select dancers on their abilities. After you have finished dancing your heat, it is good manners to bow or curtsey to the room and to the organiser

When a heat is being danced, please do not walk around the dance floor, it is extremely rude. The heat is only a minute long, you can wait!!

If you are lucky enough to get into the final, please make sure that you congratulate all the dancers and stand correctly in the line up – preferably in 3rd position and most of all don’t show dissent for your placing – most of the time, you have knocked dancers out to get into the final.

Do not get too close to your judges when dancing, they are not short-sighted, it just annoys them.

Show good manners to competition organisers
As the school has many competitors now, you will find that you will be competing against someone from the dance school, please support them and do not criticise them. Dancers should remember that they are not only representing themselves but the dance teacher and dance school and should therefore act and speak accordingly.
